endless tunnel
endless tunnel is the Debutkoncert for Joss Smith and was created as a collaboration between the composer, ensemble K!art and Current Resonance. endless tunnel is a composition that repeats a three-minute segment of material twelve times with each repetition revealing new features and shining a light on syntactic relations between text, video, light, performance and meaning. Inconsistencies are revealed through small, almost imperceptible changes, giving the audience a 'spot-the-difference' like experience and eventually causing inevitible major changes to take place.
endless tunnel is paired with two other compositions. any time, any place except here and now is a piece for whistles, live video and electronics. Using video material of real and virtual detritus, the piece leads to an overload of information and sound. Denominations and Forces is a trio for clarinet, voice, melodica and playback and works with suggestion and unreliability. The amount of voices playing at once is called out but it is hard to tell if this is correct or not. Later on, chords and functional harmony are called out and it is very clear that only some of these are trustworthy.
